Valve Expands SteamOS Support to Third-Party Handhelds with Major Update
Valve has released SteamOS 3.7.8, a significant update that extends official support to third-party handheld gaming devices, including Lenovo’s Legion Go and Asus’ ROG Ally series. This move marks a strategic shift in Valve’s approach, aiming to foster a broader ecosystem for portable PC gaming.
Official SteamOS Support for AMD-Powered Handhelds
The latest update allows SteamOS to be installed on AMD-powered handheld devices equipped with NVMe SSDs. Previously, users relied on alternative solutions like Bazzite to emulate the SteamOS experience on non-Steam Deck hardware. Valve has now provided official recovery images and installation instructions, simplifying the process for users of compatible devices.
Enhanced Compatibility and User Experience
SteamOS 3.7.8 introduces a “Steam OS Compatible” library tab, enabling users to easily identify games optimized for their devices. Additionally, the update expands the Steam Deck Verified system to include any device running SteamOS, ensuring a consistent gaming experience across different hardware.
Improvements for Steam Deck Users
Steam Deck owners benefit from several enhancements in this update. A new battery-saving feature allows users to cap the battery charge at 80%, potentially extending the device’s battery lifespan. Other improvements include updates to the Linux base, upgraded Mesa graphics drivers, and an enhanced desktop interface with Plasma 6.2.5.
Launch of SteamOS-Powered Lenovo Legion Go S
In conjunction with the update, Valve announced the release of a SteamOS-powered version of the Lenovo Legion Go S, scheduled for May 25. This device represents the first officially supported non-Steam Deck handheld to ship with SteamOS, signaling Valve’s commitment to expanding its operating system’s reach.
Valve’s latest update underscores its dedication to creating a versatile and inclusive platform for handheld PC gaming, inviting more manufacturers and users into the SteamOS ecosystem.
